This program run by Pacific Northwest Federal Credit Union teaches Parkrose HS students about real life money.Kids are given a career and salary and then go to different resource areas at the fair to get needed items. They need to rent an apartment, get furniture, decide whether or not to buy a car, get a cell phone, get a tattoo. Children living in poverty often enter kindergarten lacking the foundational skills critical for learning to read.The harsh reality is that two thirds of low-income families own no books for their children.The Children’s Book Bank engages volunteers in collecting and preparing donated books for distribution.

Mud Mayhem is a mud obstacle course for children 6+. PNG volunteers will be stationed at various obstacles to be safety and traffic monitors.The event is run by the Cascade Pacific Council and we will be working with their Community Impact Youth who primarily come from high risk environments (gangs and poverty).PNG volunteers will get a meal voucher for the on-site vendors, a staff t-shirt, and a chance to get muddy and run the obstacle course if you want!

Book Buddies is a fun opportunity to read with some of Friends of the Children’s program youth. Volunteers will read for 30 minutes either 1:1 or in a small group with elementary-aged program youth. There are opportunities to read throughout the week, 8/25 – 29, 12:00 – 12:30.The objective of the program is to encourage a love of reading in their youth and to reinforce that their communities care about them.

PNG is buying 91 backpacks in support of the Friends of the Children School Supplies Drive. We have a special opportunity to add to this effort.Friends of the Children is asking PNG to volunteer to write inspirational notes to their youth as they begin a new school year. They will provide a list of youth, their age and grade, paper, pens, markers, stickers, etc.It can mean a lot to a child that someone out in the community is rooting for them. That can be you!
